Custom Furniture for Kitchens: Drawers That Use Every Inch

carpentry 20 min read 0 views

Custom Furniture is the easiest win in a tight Singapore kitchen: build the drawers to the exact width of your cabinet openings and you stop losing the back half of every shelf. Most HDB 4-room kitchens are barely 6 to 8 square metres, so the 15 centimetres you reclaim behind the doors actually changes how the room feels day to day.

Why drawers beat deep shelves in a local kitchen

Deep base cabinets with a single shelf look fine in a showroom. At home, the items you use weekly end up at the front and everything behind them goes stale. A drawer pulls the whole contents out to you, so nothing hides.

Here is what we usually fit inside one standard 600mm base cabinet:

  • Two shallow drawers up top for cutlery, spice jars and tea towels.
  • One mid drawer for pots, tiffin boxes and mixing bowls.
  • One deep drawer at the bottom for the wok, rice cooker insert and slow cooker.

That single cabinet now does the job of three open shelves, and you can see everything without kneeling on the floor.

Plan the layout before we measure a thing

Before the tape comes out, sit down with the way you actually cook. The drawer plan should follow your habits, not a catalogue page.

  1. List your heavy items first — rice cooker, air fryer, stand mixer. These go in the lowest, strongest drawers with full-extension runners.
  2. Group by task — keep spices and oils near the hob, plates near the sink, cutlery near the dining pass.
  3. Mark the clearances — drawers need about 500mm of pull-out space in front. In a galley kitchen, check the opposing door will not block it.
  4. Decide on soft-close — worth it in a flat with thin walls, because the neighbours below hear every slam.

Custom Furniture for the corners you usually waste

The corner where two runs of cabinets meet is the most wasted space in any kitchen. A blind corner swallows a whole cabinet that you can never reach. We fix it two ways.

Le Mans or pull-out carousel — two kidney-shaped trays swing out so nothing hides at the back. Good for a 5-room flat where the corner is wide and square.

Magic corner — a sliding bracket pulls a deep drawer forward and swings a second one into reach. Cheaper than a carousel and just as useful for everyday items.

For a 4-room BTO the corner is often tighter, so we sometimes run a single straight run and skip the corner cabinet entirely. Honest, and you lose nothing you would have used anyway.

Materials that hold up to our heat and humidity

Local kitchens sit next to the hob and the sink, so moisture is constant and the air is warm. Pick the carcass and front with that in mind.

  • Plywood carcass — resists warping far better than MDF in humid weather. Costs a bit more but it lasts.
  • Laminate fronts — easy to wipe, comes in wood-look or plain colours, and shrugs off oil splashes.
  • Solid wood fronts — lovely, but they move with the humidity and need upkeep. Save them for one feature drawer bank, not the whole run.
  • MDF with veneer — smooth and affordable, but keep it away from the sink edge where water pools.

Timeline, budget and what HDB allows

A full kitchen from measure to install runs roughly 6 to 10 weeks: a week to measure and quote, two to three weeks for design and material choices, then four to six weeks for the workshop to build and the team to fit.

Expect to spend on average S$8,000 to S$18,000 for a custom kitchen in a 4-room or 5-room flat, depending on how many drawers and what fronts you pick. That sits inside the usual S$30k-70k whole-home renovation budget most HDB owners plan around.

HDB rules are simple here: you cannot hack the structural walls, and any vent pipe or electrical point must stay reachable. Drawers themselves need no approval. Condo owners should check the MCST handbook, because some buildings restrict works to certain hours and ask for a deposit against noise complaints.

When you start picturing the kitchen you actually want, think about the one drawer that would make dinner easier tonight. Build from there, and the rest of the room tends to fall into place without much fuss.
