Custom Furniture for Kitchens: Hiding the Fridge in Plain Sight

carpentry 18 min read 0 views

Custom Furniture can wrap your fridge in matching cabinetry so it disappears into the kitchen run, and in a Singapore flat where the fridge often faces the dining area, that calm front changes the whole feel of the room. You keep the same machine you bought, just lose the stainless slab staring back at you.

Measure the machine, not the gap

A fridge panel only works if it fits the exact unit. We measure the appliance first, then build the carcass.

  • Height — note if the door is French, double or single; the panel must clear the hinge swing.

  • Ventilation gap — leave 25 to 50mm top and sides or the compressor overheats in our climate.
  • Depth — most fridges are deeper than a 600mm cabinet, so the door sits proud; we build a rebate so it looks flush.
  • Handle clearance — the front panel must not trap the handle, or you will never open it.

Choose how hidden you want it

There are degrees of disguise, and the right one depends on your budget and your panel supplier.

  1. Full carcass wrap — the fridge sits inside a cabinet box with a hinged door panel; from across the room it reads as a cupboard.
  2. Side fillers only — cheaper; we add matching panels to the gaps so the fridge no longer juts out alone.
  3. Integrated handle-less — a push-to-open front with no grip, the cleanest look but the priciest hardware.
  4. Proud front, matched colour — the simplest: a panel on the door face in the same laminate as the kitchen, no full box.

We tell clients honestly which option their fridge allows before quoting, because not every model takes a door panel.

Custom Furniture around the service yard

Many HDB layouts put the fridge near the service yard door or the bomb shelter, which limits the wrap.

Check the swing — the yard door and the fridge door must not fight for the same floor.

Keep the trap clear — if the floor trap sits by the fridge, the panel stops short of it so the plumber can still reach.

Bomb shelter frame — you cannot build over the bomb shelter door, so the fridge panel stops at that line. We design around it.

Materials that stay put in the heat

The fridge compressor throws warm air, and our kitchens are already warm, so the panel must be stable.

  • Plywood carcass — the only sensible choice next to a running compressor; MDF will cup over time.
  • Laminate or melamine face — matches the kitchen and wipes clean of the odd splash.
  • Vent grille strip — a slatted panel at the top lets the heat out; skip it and the motor works harder.

Rules, cost and build time

Wrapping a fridge is fixed carpentry, so no HDB approval is needed as long as you are not touching a structural wall or the window grille, and you keep the electrical and gas points reachable. Condo MCSTs may ask about works timing and a deposit, so confirm before the carpenter arrives.

A full fridge wrap costs roughly S$600 to S$2,000, depending on whether you need the full box or just door and side panels. It builds in the same 6-to-10-week kitchen window, fitted just before the appliances land.

Most owners fold it into the S$30k-70k renovation budget and say it is the detail visitors notice first.

Hiding the fridge gives the kitchen a quiet, finished look without changing how you cook. Think about what your eye lands on when you walk in, and start the panel there.
