Custom Furniture for Kitchens: An Island With Seats for Two

Custom Furniture lets a compact Singapore kitchen carry a small island with seats for two, and that single addition gives you a casual spot for breakfast and a second prep surface without needing a sprawling open plan. In a 4-room flat the trick is keeping the island slim and movable enough that the workflow still works.
Check the walkway before you build
An island fails the moment it blocks the cook's path. Measure the work triangle first, not the look.
- Minimum aisle — leave 900mm between the island and the base cabinets so two people pass.
- Seat swing — stools need 450mm behind them; if the wall is closer, use low backless stools that tuck under.
- Hob or sink on the island? — only if the island sits over 1.2 metres from the opposite run, or the aisle gets tight.
- Gas vs induction — HDB allows gas, but an island hob means running the pipe; induction is simpler to wire.
Design the island for two, not for show
A two-seat island is a perch, not a dining table. We size it for that honest job.
- Length — 1.2 to 1.5 metres seats two comfortably with elbows clear.
- Depth — 600mm of worktop, plus a 300mm overhang on the seat side for knees.
- Overhang support — a 300mm lip needs a bracket or corbel; do not rely on the worktop alone.
- Seat height — 900mm to the stool top, a touch higher than a dining chair so legs fit under the 900mm counter.
Keep the seat side clear of the hob. Nobody wants hot oil next to where the kids eat toast.
Custom Furniture that hides storage below
The space under the island is prime, so we rarely leave it empty.
Two deep drawers — take the pots and the air fryer basket, the things that clog the main cabinets.
Open shelf at the seat end — a spot for the cookbooks and the nice bowls you want on show.
Bin bay — a pull-out waste drawer keeps the trash off the floor and near the prep edge.
Materials for a hard-working top
The island top takes more knocks than anything else in the room, so pick for use.
- Quartz — steady, non-porous, shrugs off the curry stains; a plain colour hides crumbs.
- Solid wood edge — warms the look, but seal it or the turmeric will mark it.
- Laminate worktop — affordable and clean, though it can scorch if a pot lands straight from the stove.
- Plywood carcass — the body of the island should be plywood near any sink cutout.
Rules, cost and the timeline
A freestanding island is loose furniture, so HDB needs no approval as long as it does not sit on a structural wall or block the escape path. If you fix it to the floor, keep it clear of the floor trap and the gas riser. Condo MCSTs may ask about the build timing and a deposit, so check the handbook.
A two-seat custom island runs roughly S$2,500 to S$6,000, depending on the top and how much storage goes below. It builds inside the same 6-to-10-week measure-to-install window as the kitchen, often as the last piece fitted.
Most owners count it within the S$30k-70k renovation budget and find it replaces a separate breakfast table in the living room.
An island for two turns the kitchen into the room everyone drifts to, not just the one who cooks. Picture where you already stand with a cup of coffee, and start the island there.
