Custom Furniture for Bedrooms: A Reading Nook by the Window
Custom Furniture builds a reading nook into the window bay so you get a quiet seat with light, without sacrificing floor space. In most Singapore bedrooms the window wall is the only spot with a view and a breeze, so a built-in bench there turns dead sill space into your favourite corner.
Picking the Spot and the Size
Look at where the window sits and how much sill depth you have. In a 5-room HDB around 110 sqm the bedroom window often has a 40 to 60cm deep reveal, enough for a seat if we build a base out to it. In a 4-room you may only get a slim bench, but that's still a place to read at night.
Measure these first:
- The window width and the sill depth to the wall.
- How high the sill is from the floor, aim for a 40 to 45cm seat.
- Any aircon trunking or power points along that wall.
Custom Furniture Build for Comfort
We build a **plywood base with a cushioned top** and lift-up lids or front drawers for storage underneath. A back rest panel angles slightly so you lean without a pillow. Add a small side shelf for a book and a cup, and a dimmable sconce above for evening reading.

Steps we use:
- Set the seat height to match a dining chair, around 42cm.
- Build the base as one wall-fixed unit for stability.
- Fit a hinged lid with gas stays so it won't slam.
- Add a reading light on a separate switch from the main room.
Materials for a Sunny, Damp Edge
The nook sits by glass, so we use **moisture-resistant plywood** with a laminate base and a fabric cushion you can unzip and wash. Solid wood near a window can cup in our humidity. MDF is fine for the back panel if kept dry. Laminate on the base shrugs off the occasional wet shoe.
- Plywood: stable, our frame choice.
- Laminate: wipe-clean base, many colours.
- MDF: smooth back panel, keep dry.
- Solid wood: pretty, more upkeep near glass.
Cost, Timeline and Guidelines
A window reading nook runs roughly S$1,500 to S$3,500 with cushions and lighting. From measure to install, plan **6 to 10 weeks**: a week to survey, two to three weeks to design, then four to six weeks in the workshop.
For HDB flats, keep the nook below the window sill and never block the window itself, since that's an escape route. It's non-structural so no permit is needed. New flats carry a **1-year defect liability period** for wall defects, not the joinery. Condo MCSTs generally allow the build but may limit noise to weekdays and hold a renovation deposit until they inspect.
Care and Resale Appeal
Unzip and wash the cushion cover every few months, and wipe the base after the rainy season. A reading nook by the window photographs as a lifestyle feature, and buyers love a bedroom that already has a calm corner to call their own.
If your window sill is just a plant graveyard, a built-in reading nook gives that light-filled spot a real job and a reason to slow down at the end of the day.
