Custom Furniture for Partitions: Divide Without Blocking Light
Custom Furniture as a partition lets you split a Singapore open-plan flat without building a wall that kills the light, so you get a bedroom corner or a study nook and the living room still feels open. Most HDB and condo owners want the divide but fear the cave.
Why a Full Wall Fails
A solid partition to the ceiling steals the daylight that took one window to make. In a 4-room HDB of roughly 90 sqm the living and dining share a single light source, and a brick wall turns the dining half into a tunnel by 6pm. Built carpentry can divide and still pass the sun through.
The fix is a half-height or open-front divider — a bookshelf on legs, a slatted screen, a cabinet with a glass top band. You mark the zone, hide the clutter, and the light walks over the top. Visitors read "room" without you losing the air.
- Stop the partition 40 to 60cm below the ceiling to pass light.
- Use open shelves or slats, not a solid back panel.
- Keep it off the window wall so the source stays clear.
Pick the Partition Type

A low cabinet partition — 1.1 metre tall — splits the living from the study and doubles as a bookcase and a printer hideaway. A slatted timber screen gives privacy without a closed feel and suits a bedroom-off-living split. A glass-topped sideboard lets the cat sit on it and the light through beneath.
For a young family, a partition with a chalkboard panel on the kids' side turns the divide into a play wall. Build it in plywood with a laminate face; the slats should be 4 to 6cm wide with 3cm gaps so the room stays connected. Too narrow a gap and it reads as a wall anyway.
Custom Furniture Partitions That Still Let Light Through
The trick is the top band. Run the partition to 2.0 metres, then switch to a 40cm glass or open section to the soffit. The eye stops at the solid base and reads a room; the light clears the top and the flat stays bright. Add a concealed LED strip along the partition top so the divide glows at night instead of casting a black line.

If the partition backs the sofa, build a shallow ledge on the living side for the remotes and the plant. On the study side, a pin board or a magnetic panel. One piece, two faces, two rooms — that is the efficiency a Singapore flat needs when every square metre costs real money.
Cost, Timing, and HDB Rules
A partition runs roughly S$1,500 to S$4,000 for a 2 to 3 metre span with the open top, and bundles into a full renovation. From measure to install, 6 to 10 weeks. HDB allows non-structural dividers but you must not hack the slab or the beams, and the bomb shelter door must stay clear — keep the partition off that wall.
Condo MCST rules often cap the height of internal dividers and require fire-rated glass near the escape path, so check the by-laws before you commit the drawing. The 1-year defect liability covers the carpentry joints; keep the invoice. A wobble in a tall slat screen is the common defect, and the workshop returns to brace it.
Divide, Do Not Shrink
A good partition gives you a second room and keeps the flat feeling like one. That balance — more function, same openness — is what whole-house customization is for: shaping the space you have, not boxing it in.
