Custom Furniture by bench: A Cutlery Drawer That Sorts
Custom Furniture at the kitchen bench should start with the cutlery drawer, because that's the one you open twenty times a day. The core idea: build a shallow top drawer with fixed dividers sized to your actual spoons and knives, not a loose tray that slides around. Get the layout right and you stop digging through a jumble every morning.

Why A Sorting Drawer Pays Off
Most HDB kitchens are tight. A 4-room flat gives you about 90sqm total, so the kitchen counter is precious and you can't waste it on a knife block and three jars. A dedicated sorting drawer keeps the bench clear and puts everything at arm height.
It also stops the small chaos. When every fork has a slot, the kids actually put them back. That alone is worth the build.
Custom Furniture Layout That Works
Here's how we usually set it out:

Two depths – forks and spoons in a shallow 80mm tray, serving utensils in a deeper 150mm section beside it.
Fixed dividers – ask the carpenter to glue or screw the partitions so they don't drift. Adjustable plastic trays look neat but shift the moment you pull the drawer.
A knife insert – a horizontal slot block keeps blades from rattling and is safer than a block on the counter.
Felt or cork base – a thin liner stops metal clatter and protects the laminate underneath.
Materials and Build Notes
The drawer box itself should be plywood with a laminate face, not MDF, since it gets pulled and bumped daily. Soft-close runners are worth the small extra cost; they save the front from slamming and last longer in a humid kitchen.
Width matters. A 600mm base cabinet gives a usable 500mm-wide drawer, enough for a full household's cutlery. If your bench is the slim 450mm type, go for two stacked shallow drawers instead of one deep one.
Cost, Timeline and Rules
A custom sorting drawer inside a new cabinet costs roughly S$120 to S$300 on its own, or it's folded into a full carpentry package. If you're redoing the kitchen as part of a reno, total budgets in Singapore run about S$30k to S$70k for the whole flat, with the kitchen a sizeable slice.
From measure to install, the carpentry takes around 6 to 10 weeks. The drawer is just one part of that window, so plan it with the rest of the kitchen rather than as a last add-on.
For condos, the MCST may restrict wet works and drilling to certain hours, so confirm before the team cuts on-site. HDB flats have no such by-law but you still owe neighbours consideration during hacking.
Care and Resale Value
Wipe the liner when you run the dishwasher empty, and the drawer stays fresh. Every year or two, tighten the runner screws; timber moves with our weather and a loose screw is the usual fault.
On resale, a tidy cutlery drawer reads as "well-kept home" to a viewing buyer, even if they can't say why. We built ours three years ago and it's the detail friends comment on first. Good Custom Furniture is the kind you stop noticing because it just works.
If you're sketching a kitchen, start the plan at the drawer. Get the small things sorted and the rest of the bench falls into place.
