Custom Furniture for bay window: A Corner That Turns Smart
Custom Furniture for your bay window can turn a dead corner into the most used seat in the flat. In many Singapore HDB and condo layouts, the bay window is just a ledge nobody knows what to do with. Build around it and you get storage plus a spot to sit, read, or watch the rain.
What a bay window corner is good for
The bay window in local flats is usually a reinforced concrete ledge the builder leaves for you to work with. It's strong, so you can build a seat or cabinet right onto it without worrying about load.
People turn these into reading nooks, a kids' toy chest, or extra shoe storage below. The flat top also works as a low table for plants or a laptop when the light is good.
Just check the ledge isn't a servicing duct before you seal anything in. Some bay windows hide pipes, and you need access later.
Custom Furniture: smart ways to build around it
Lift the seat to create a hinged lid and you get a deep storage box for bulky items like fans, spare pillows, and photo albums. That's the most common smart move in a 4-room HDB of about 90sqm.

Add a thin full-height cabinet on one side to use the wall above the ledge. Shelves there hold books or display pieces without eating floor space.
For a 5-room flat near 110sqm, you can extend the seat into a low bench that runs the window width, which seats three or four people during gatherings.
Materials and humidity
Near a window, plywood with a water-resistant coat is safer than MDF, since condensation forms on glass in our climate. Laminate faces wipe clean and don't stain from damp.
Solid wood looks nice but needs oiling and can cup near a sunny window. For a bay seat, plywood is the plain practical pick.
Steps and timeline
First, confirm the ledge is solid before your Custom Furniture build begins, and note any aircon trunking above it. Then measure the window width and the ledge depth so the seat overhangs just a little.
Pick the cushion after the carpentry is done, not before, so it fits exactly. Local foam shops can cut to size within a week.
From measure to install, the carpentry part is about 6 to 10 weeks inside a normal reno. The cushion is quick after that.
Cost, rules, and upkeep
Roughly, a bay window seat with storage runs S$700 to S$1,800 depending on length and material. A side cabinet adds S$400 to S$1,000.
Condo MCST rules may limit works that change the external look, so check before adding anything that sticks out past the window line. Inside the unit, built-ins on the bay ledge are usually fine.
Wipe the seat weekly and air the cushion now and then, since window corners gather damp. A yearly check of the hinges keeps the lid from dropping.
One more tip is lighting. A small LED strip under the side cabinet makes the nook usable at night without a harsh ceiling bulb, and it shows off the display pieces. Pick a warm tone so the corner feels calm rather than like a shop shelf.
We built ours last year and it's where the kid does homework and where we sit with coffee on weekends. The box underneath holds the off-season stuff we used to shove under the bed.
