Custom Furniture for closet: Our Humid Months, Handled

Custom Furniture for a closet should start with our weather, not with pretty doors. Singapore runs at 80 percent humidity for most of the year, and that moisture settles in a closed wardrobe faster than you'd think. A closet built for this climate keeps your clothes dry, stops the musty smell, and saves you from throwing out a shirt you liked.

What the humidity actually does

When you shut a wardrobe full of worn-once clothes, the damp air gets trapped. In a 4-room HDB of about 90sqm the master bedroom closet often sits against a wall that stays cooler, so condensation forms inside. Left alone, that's mould on the back panel within a season.

You'll notice it as a faint smell first, then a grey bloom on fabric. By the time you see spots, the wood finish has already taken in water. The closet needs to breathe and dry, not just hide your things.

Materials that don't fight the climate

Plywood is our default for closet carcasses. It resists warping better than solid wood when the air turns wet, and a sealed edge keeps the core dry. Choose a boreal plywood if the budget allows, since the glues are stabler.

Solid wood draws moisture and swells at the joints. It's beautiful, but in a non-aircon bedroom it moves enough to crack the lacquer. If you want the look, use it for the doors only and keep the frame in plywood.

MDF is fine for painted fronts away from the floor, but never let it touch the ground or a damp wall. One leak from the aircon trunking and the base is gone.

Laminate skins over the panels give a smooth, wipeable face that doesn't harbour spores. Pair it with plywood and you've got a closet that survives a wet November.

Ventilation beats gadgets

We cut a slim gap at the top and bottom of the back, or fit a louvred panel, so air moves through even when the doors are shut. That alone drops the humidity inside by a noticeable margin. Add a small rechargeable dehumidifier box on the shelf and you're set for roughly three months before it needs a plug-in dry.

If your closet backs onto the bathroom, ask us to add a vapour barrier. We've opened closets next to a wet wall and found the entire back soaked through. A sheet of membrane costs little and saves the carcass.

Cost, timeline, and the reno picture

A built-in closet for one bedroom runs on average S$1,200 to S$2,800 depending on size and finish. A full wall of his-and-hers storage in a 5-room flat of about 110sqm can reach S$4,000 to S$6,000. These numbers sit inside the broader reno budget most owners plan at S$30k to S$70k for the whole home.

Measure to install takes about 6 to 10 weeks. The carpenter surveys, the workshop cuts the panels, and fitting is a day or two. If you're under the one-year defect liability period on a BTO, report any swelling early, because that window closes and the builder won't touch it after.

Custom Furniture and your building's rules

Custom Furniture for closets rarely needs approval in HDB, since it's internal and non-structural. In a condo, the MCST won't care about a wardrobe, but they will if you knock a wall to make room for it. Keep the structure and build inside it.

For resale, buyers in Singapore weigh storage heavily. A musty, warped closet is a red flag; a dry, well-ventilated one suggests the whole home is maintained. It won't set your price, but it removes a reason for someone to lowball you.

Our humid months aren't going anywhere, so build the closet to live with them. Give it air, keep the wood off the wet wall, and you'll open the doors to clean clothes long after the off-the-shelf unit next door has started to smell.
