Custom Furniture in HDB: A Recipe Card Ledge
Custom Furniture in HDB kitchens is handy as a recipe card ledge, a slim rail above the counter that holds cards and a tablet at eye level while you cook. In a typical HDB 4-room (about 90sqm) or 5-room (around 110sqm) flat, the kitchen is compact, and a small ledge keeps your recipe where you can read it instead of propped against the soy sauce.

What the ledge looks like

It's a shallow horizontal shelf, roughly 8 to 12cm deep, fixed to the tile splashback or the underside of an upper cabinet. A small lip at the front stops cards sliding off when the fan kicks in.
The custom part is the length and the height, set so you read it without bending and without it blocking the cabinets above. We measure from the counter to your eye line, then cut the ledge to the wall's exact run.
Add a thin slot for a phone or tablet and the ledge serves both paper recipes and YouTube cooking clips.
Cost, timeline and fitting
A custom recipe ledge costs roughly S$120 to S$350, a tiny sum against a reno of S$30k to S$70k. It's often added to a kitchen carpentry package.
From measure to install, allow about 6 to 10 weeks if it's part of a bigger kitchen job. As a standalone piece, it can go in quickly once the backsplash is tiled.
Fix it after tiling so the maker can drill into solid wall, not hollow board.
Custom Furniture materials for a greasy spot
Kitchen walls get oil and steam, so the ledge needs a wipeable face.
Laminate on plywood is the easy answer: sealed, cleanable, and stable in our humidity. Solid wood with a food-safe oil looks warm but needs occasional re-oiling near the stove. MDF is a poor pick here; splashes swell it. Laminate edges must be capped so grease doesn't creep under.
A metal rail is another option and wipes in seconds, though it shows fingerprints.

HDB and condo notes
In HDB flats, adding a ledge to your own kitchen is allowed and doesn't touch the 1-year defect liability period unless you drill a supplied cabinet the builder still covers. Use wall plugs suited to tiles so you don't crack them.
Condo MCSTs may set rules on drilling and works hours. A small ledge is low-impact, but follow the by-laws to avoid a complaint from a neighbour.
Care and resale
Wipe the ledge after cooking, especially after frying, since oil films build fast in Singapore kitchens. Check the fixings yearly; heat and moisture loosen plugs slowly. If you cook with a wok often, give the ledge a quick wipe even on days you barely splashed, because the haze settles where you least expect it.
For resale, a thoughtful kitchen detail suggests a careful owner, though a ledge is minor. Its real value is daily: you cook from a recipe you can actually see.
A client in a Woodlands 4-room mounted a ledge by the hob and said she stopped dropping her phone in the curry. If your recipes end up on the floor, give them a ledge.
