Custom Furniture of landing: A Clutter-Hiding Console

carpentry 16 min read 0 views

Custom Furniture is how you turn a bare landing into a clutter-hiding console that swallows shoes, keys and the post without looking like storage. Ours now keeps the staircase tidy and the visitors never see the mess.

Why the landing gets ignored

The landing at the top of the stairs in a two-storey home or walk-up is usually dead space, a spot where things pile because there's no proper home for them. We had shoes, a drone of chargers and a stack of flyers we meant to read. A standard console was either too deep or too short for the wall.

Building to the exact wall length meant we used every centimetre. The piece now runs the full 2.1 metres and still leaves the stair rail clear.

Custom Furniture that hides the mess

The point was concealment, not display. We wanted a calm face from the stairs and chaos behind the doors. The build came together as follows.

A shallow 30-centimetre depth so the console hugs the wall and nobody brushes it on the way up.

Soft-close doors across the front, with a single open shelf at the top for the one plant we actually keep alive.

An internal divider sized to shoe boxes, because without it the space becomes a single undignified heap.

A cable channel at the back for the phone chargers, so the landing doubles as a drop for devices overnight.

Materials for a high-traffic spot

The landing takes knocks from bags and the vacuum, so we went laminate-faced plywood. It takes a hit and wipes clean, which MDF wouldn't survive after a few months of scuffs.

Solid wood would have looked richer but cost roughly twice and needed oiling we'd skip. Plywood ran about S$130 a sheet and the laminate finish matched the hallway. Total materials near S$500, labour around S$900.

Cost, timing and permissions

The console cost about S$1,700 with install, delivered in seven weeks from measure. That sits inside the usual six-to-ten-week window for custom work once the queue builds.

For HDB landed or maisonette units, a freestanding console against your own wall is fine. Condo owners should check the MCST rules, since some managements restrict fixed fittings in common stair areas and ask for approval during the one-year defect liability period.

Upkeep and what it adds

We dust the top weekly and check the door hinges every few months. The laminate needs nothing beyond a damp cloth, which suits a busy landing.

At resale, a tidy landing reads as more storage, a selling point in tighter flats where 4-room units sit around 90sqm. We keep it because the stairs finally stay clear, and that's the kind of small win you feel every day.

The kids now know where their shoes go without being told, which is the quiet test of whether storage actually works. A piece that looks neat but nobody uses is just expensive cladding, and ours gets opened a dozen times a day.
