Custom Furniture with loft: A Glass Rack That Tilts

carpentry 17 min read 0 views

Custom Furniture is the answer for a loft with a glass rack that tilts down, because the slope of the ceiling leaves no room for a standard shelf and a pivoting unit reaches the glasses without a step stool. We built one and the morning routine got easier.

Why lofts break normal storage

A loft bedroom or studio almost always has a low pitch where the roof meets the wall. That triangle of space is too short for a cabinet yet too useful to waste. Our loft had 1.1 metres at the lowest point, perfect for a rack if it could swing.

A fixed shelf there would have meant crouching and reaching blind. The tilt lets the whole row come down to a comfortable height, then return flat against the slope.

The rack had to be light, since it moves every day, and secure, since glass is unforgiving. The build worked out as below.

A pine frame on a wall pivot, sized to hold eight tumblers in a single row so the weight stays even.

Notched rails that cradle each glass base, so nothing rolls when the rack is up or down.

A soft-catch strap that holds the unit at the lowered angle, taking the strain off the hinges.

Felt bumpers where the frame meets the slope, to keep the loft quiet at night.

Materials that keep the weight down

Solid pine was the right call here: light, cheap at roughly S$15 a metre, and warm against the timber loft. We avoided plywood because the visible edge would have needed finishing we didn't want to maintain.

Laminate wasn't needed since the glasses don't wet the wood, and MDF was too heavy for a moving part. The frame and hardware came to about S$350, with labour near S$500 for the pivot work.

Cost, timing and the rules

The rack cost roughly S$850 with install, ready in six weeks from measure. Small loft pieces often fall under the six-to-ten-week window because they share a workshop slot with bigger jobs.

For HDB loft beds and mezzanines, check the structure can take the fixings; a loft built within your flat must not breach height or safety rules. Condo MCST bodies may ask about load and noise, especially inside the one-year defect liability period when alterations are scrutinised.

Living with the tilt

We oil the pine twice a year and check the pivot bolts every few months. The glasses come down smooth and the loft stays clear the rest of the time.

At resale, a clever loft detail reads as smart use of space, a plus in a 4-room flat around 90sqm where every metre counts. We keep it because it simply works, and the slope finally earns its keep.

The glasses come down for the morning pour and go back up after, and the loft stays open the rest of the day. If you've got a pitched ceiling, a tilting rack is the rare fix that adds function without stealing the little headroom you have.
