Custom Furniture with platform: When to Book Your Slot

carpentry 18 min read 0 views

Custom Furniture with a platform bed only works if you book the carpenter's slot before the renovation crowd swamps the calendar. In Singapore the trade runs roughly six to ten weeks from drawing to delivery, and the good workshops are booked out months ahead around BTO key-collection peaks, so lock your slot the moment your reno permit clears.

What a platform actually buys you in a small room

A platform lifts the mattress 300mm to 450mm off the floor and turns the dead space underneath into drawers, a lift-up storage bay, or a walk-in void for the suitcases. In a 4-room HDB bedroom of maybe 12 sqm, that can replace a separate wardrobe run and free a wall for the study. It reads as calm and built-in, which is why so many BTO owners ask for it.

The trade-off is height. A 450mm platform plus a 300mm mattress puts your pillow near 750mm, fine for most ceilings of 2,600mm to 2,800mm, but in an older flat with a low beam it can feel boxed. Measure the ceiling to the beam before you commit, and keep the platform under 350mm if the room is tight.

Platforms also hide the floor, so the vinyl or tile you paid for disappears. If you love the floor, use a low 200mm plinth instead and keep the storage in a separate cabinet. A platform is a storage decision first and a style decision second.

When Custom Furniture slots fill up in the Singapore calendar

Carpentry workshops in Singapore run on the BTO cycle. Key collection happens in waves, and when a big BTO estate like Punggol or Tengah hands over, every workshop within reach is full. Book at least two to three months before you need delivery, and treat the six-to-ten-week lead time as the best case, not the promise. Chinese New Year and the December break also stall production for weeks, so a slot booked in November may not land until March.

The booking itself is light: a site measure, a 50% deposit, and a drawing sign-off. The wait is in the queue, not the paperwork. Ask the carpenter for a written delivery window, not a vague "next month", and build your move-in date around it. We have seen owners sleep on the floor for six weeks because they assumed the platform would beat the lead time.

If you are condo, the MCST noise window of roughly 9am to 5pm weekdays still applies to the on-site scribing, so even a pre-made platform needs a weekday install slot. Book the management lift and the delivery window together, because condos charge for after-hours hoisting and ban storing the piece in the corridor.

HDB rules that shape the platform

A platform is carpentry, not hacking, so HDB does not need a special permit for it — but it must sit within your approved layout and clear the bomb shelter door and its swing. Do not build the platform over the shelter reveal or fix it to the structural wall; a freestanding platform with a 10mm gap at the edges is the safe read. The same goes for a ledge by the window, which HDB treats carefully if it blocks the openable pane.

Weight is the quiet issue. A full platform with drawers full of books is heavy, and HDB floors are rated for normal home loads, not a gym. Spread the storage, keep the drawers for light linens not the book collection, and you stay within the slab's comfort. Solid plywood for the frame, not MDF, because the ply holds the repeated lift-up stress.

One last rule: the platform must not reduce the window's escape clearances or box a smoke detector. Tell the carpenter where the detector is before the drawing is signed, because moving it later is an electrical job, not a carpentry one.

Book the slot early, size the height to the ceiling, and keep it off the protected walls. A platform done on time is the piece that makes a small Singapore bedroom feel twice its size; done late, it is the reason you camp on the floor.
