Custom Furniture with vanity: A Shelf That Lights Up
A light-up shelf above your bathroom vanity is a slim, lit ledge built into your Custom Furniture that gives you even face light for skincare and shaving without the harsh overhead bulb.
Why vanity lighting is usually wrong
Most bathrooms have a single light on the ceiling, which throws shadows under your eyes and makes shaving or makeup a guessing game. A lit shelf brings the light forward and to the sides, where you need it.
It also doubles as a display ledge for the few things you use daily — serum, a watch, a perfume — so they're lit and within reach instead of buried in a drawer.
In a compact Singapore bathroom, that combination of light and ledge saves both wall space and morning friction.
Where the lit shelf goes
We place it based on the mirror and basin:
1. Above the mirror — a horizontal lit ledge that washes light down across the face.
2. To one side — a shorter ledge if the vanity is narrow and the mirror is tall.
3. Recessed into the vanity back — for a flush look where the shelf seems part of the wall.

Materials for a wet room
Bathrooms are the toughest room for furniture. The carcass must be plywood or a waterproof board, never MDF, which will bubble the first time steam settles on it.
A laminate or acrylic face that wipes dry is the practical choice. Solid wood can work with heavy sealing, but it's a risk near a splashing basin and costs more for little payoff here.
The light is a sealed, bathroom-rated LED strip — not a desk strip — so moisture can't get to the parts. We keep the driver outside the wet zone where possible.
Cost, timeline and HDB or condo rules
A vanity with a lit shelf is part of the bathroom carpentry or a custom vanity unit. On average a custom vanity runs S$800 to S$3,000, with the lighting a few hundred more.
From measure to install, count on 6 to 10 weeks within the broader reno, covered by the standard one-year defect liability period for any fitting that loosens.
Condo MCST rules may set the reno window and require a permit before works; HDB flats are more open but still expect wet works done in the proper phase. Plan the vanity with the rest of the bathroom, not after.
Care and small habits
Wipe the ledge dry after showers so water doesn't sit on the lip. A dry microfibre cloth once a week keeps the light cover clear.
If the light dims or flickers, it's often a loose driver connection rather than a dead strip — an easy check before calling anyone.
Set the tone to around 4000K for a true reflection; anything warmer hides what you're actually doing to your face.
A lit vanity shelf is one of those upgrades that feels like a hotel and works like a tool. You see yourself properly, your daily items stay put and lit, and the bathroom feels considered rather than cramped. Worth it from the first morning.
